Description
What is LSZ?
Lysergic acid 2,4-dimethylazetidide (also known as λ, Lambda, and LSZ) is a synthetic psychedelic of the lysergamide chemical class which produces effects considered quite similar to LSD, with a slightly shorter duration.
First synthesized in the 2000s by a team led by David E. Nichols at Purdue University, LSZ became popular among the psychonaut community when it hit the market in 2012, sold on blotter paper or in liquid form under names like “Diazedine” and “λ” (or “Lambda”). While LSZ isn’t considered addictive or physically toxic, like all psychedelics, it can cause negative psychological effects such as severe anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis, especially in those prone to mental illness. Practicing harm reduction is strongly recommended when using it.
Chemically, LSZ—short for d-lysergic acid 2,4-dimethylazetidide—is an indole derivative with tryptamine and phenethylamine groups in its structure. It’s a semi-synthetic alkaloid from the lysergamide family, built on a lysergic acid core with an amine group bound to the RN position. Its structure features a bicyclic hexahydroindole fused to a bicyclic quinoline (lysergic acid), with an amide group at carbon 8 of the quinoline. The amide’s terminal nitrogen forms a 2,4-dimethylazetidide group, and there’s a methyl group at carbon 6. Of the three possible stereoisomers around the azetidine ring, the (S,S)-(+) isomer is the most active, showing slightly higher potency than LSD in drug discrimination tests with trained rats.
Pharmacological effects
LSZ’s efficacy at the 5-HT2A receptors are believed to create psychedelic effects, however it is not clear how these interactions result in the psychedelic experience.
